Inspiring the next generation of women in STEM alongside Project Scientist
With the increased digitization of our world and the continuous advancements in computing, STEM — or science, technology, engineering, and math — jobs have grown exponentially over the last two decades. However, women currently constitute only 34% of the STEM workforce.
That’s a statistic we are working to change.
The Importance of STEM Careers for Women and Girls
Early education has proven to be an effective method to encourage and excite girls about taking a path in a STEM field. Project Scientist is a nonprofit with a mission to do just that. By engaging female role models to inspire young girls to learn and grow, Project Scientist is empowering the next generation of women STEM leaders, innovators, and disruptors.
For years, CoreLogic has been a part of this mission. Through our ongoing partnership with Project Scientist, we bring girls ages 6 – 12 to the CoreLogic campuses in Irving, Texas and Irvine, California.
“The impact Project Scientist has achieved over the past decade, and our continued evolution, are made possible by the unwavering passion and collaborative efforts of our partners like CoreLogic,” said Christy Anderson, SVP of Advancement & Partnerships at Project Scientist. “This partnership has been instrumental in driving innovation in our program delivery and enhancing opportunities for employee and employee resource group (ERG) group engagement. CoreLogic’s dedicated and passionate team has invested countless hours to ensure that the girls we serve together feel welcomed, inspired and valued.”
2024 Summer STEAM Adventure in Irving, TX
This summer we were able to supersize our Irving event week through a generous matching sponsorship from Mr. Cooper Group.
In collaboration with Project Scientist, Mr. Cooper Group, and the Irving Schools Foundation, we hosted an immersive experience for 62 girls, including 20 daughters of employees at CoreLogic and Mr. Cooper.
Those wondering why we called it a “STEAM” rather than “STEM” Adventure: “STEAM” is “STEM” with an added “A” for the arts, which provide the creative and integral parts of STEM learning.
This week-long adventure included exciting projects, field trips, and unique opportunities to explore the world of STEM first-hand. The girls also had the opportunity to tour CoreLogic’s Irving campus and Mr. Cooper’s facilities while experiencing what it’s like to work in a STEM field.
Over the course of a week, we worked to provide a safe and catalyzing space for the girls to explore their curiosity while encouraging their excitement about these career possibilities.
Here are some highlights from the 2024 edition of Project Scientist in Irving, TX:
- Each morning, female STEM Superstars from CoreLogic and partnering companies shared their personal journeys from childhood to STEM careers, leading interactive sessions to captivate and motivate the girls.
- “One of the greatest aspects was the STEM Superstars, where the girls were able to engage with women in STEM,” said Melissa Hohnholt, a data implementation professional at CoreLogic. “I was humbled to be among those women. Sharing my story and fielding the girls’ questions was the highlight of my week. We can all feel confident that this generation of intelligent and compassionate girls will become strong and vital leaders in our communities.”
- The girls visited the Robert Scott Pohl Planetarium, the Mr. Cooper Group offices, and the CoreLogic offices, including our state-of-the-art Discovery Center for immersive experiences in space exploration, IT, AI, augmented reality, and sustainability.
- Our Employee Resource Groups challenged the girls with creative-thinking exercises, including a scavenger hunt at CoreLogic’s Irving office and engaging activity booths.
- The week culminated with a science fair where the girls showcased their projects for their parents and caretakers, along with CoreLogic and Mr. Cooper Group employees.
As Project Scientist seeks to empower girls across the U.S., we will continue supporting this mission on November 11, with an all-day experience for girls at the CoreLogic headquarters in Irvine, CA.
Celebrating the Success of Women in Stem and Looking Ahead
This annual initiative is not only celebrated for its contribution to increasing the number of girls who are interested in future STEM careers, but it is also an acknowledgement of all the women who have chosen a STEM path for themselves. By passing along their passion for the industry, the women in STEM at CoreLogic are breaking barriers, building leaders, and shaping the future.
“As a woman in a STEM career, I can honestly say I didn’t picture myself here growing up. I thought the options for math and science were limited to teachers and scientists,” said Rebekah Hayes-Champagne, Product Management Principal.
“I loved watching the girls’ faces during the STEM Superstar presentations. You could tell they were surprised and excited about some of the different ways women were working in science, technology, engineering, and math. I was proud to work for a company who had so many diverse and amazing women presenting from each of these fields,” said Hayes-Champagne.
CoreLogic is proud to have such passionate employees that support building thriving communities. We believe that investing in young minds empowers girls to dream big and become tomorrow’s innovators.
Also, we would like to thank:
- The nearly 150 CoreLogic volunteers who made this week a huge success.
- Our incredible partners from Project Scientist, Mr. Cooper Group, and the Irving Schools Foundation
- Our additional supporters and volunteers from EPAM, Cognizant, Google, Salesforce, and Eliassen Group
