Across the western U.S., wildfires continue to pose a significant threat
As of July 15, 2024, more than 24,000 wildfires have burned over 3 million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Wildfire activity for the year has been the highest in California where over 3,800 fires burned more than 190,000 acres by July 14, 2024.
The ongoing wildfire threat in the U.S. highlights the critical importance of cultivating accurate risk measurement and management strategies to make communities and properties more resilient to catastrophic events.
And mitigation is an important consideration.
More than 2.6 million homes in the western U.S. are at moderate or greater wildfire risk, and these homes have a combined reconstruction cost value of $1.2 trillion. About 1.2 million of those homes have very high wildfire risk.
In California alone, more than half of a million homes face a very high wildfire risk, with a combined reconstruction value exceeding $300 billion.
However, California is not the only at-risk state.
