As online services are now the lifeblood of just about every business, the health of these interconnected services becomes even more critical. Technology continues to move fast. Along the way, it is breaking things. Organizations are swiftly moving from traditional on-premises systems to the cloud. CoreLogic® is no exception. From here, the journey is to cloud-native, with serverless being the next stop. The path of this transformation can be arduous due to the differing deployment and management models.
System failures, in the face of this large-scale and rapid change, can be expected across on-premises and the cloud. And this is exactly the point at which Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) intervenes and improves system reliability. At CoreLogic, we do not intend to sacrifice speed and innovation for reliability. Instead, we choose to invest in the SRE function to deliver all three. We care passionately about those with whom we do business.
In essence, Site Reliability Engineering at CoreLogic embodies a commitment to our clients.
In 2017, Google published and promoted its best practices for operations. Google’s decades of operating the most advanced and scalable applications in the world set the standard for how to operate reliable services at global scale. This was the initial formation of what is now Site Reliability Engineering. Contrary to what some may have suggested, SRE is not a replacement for modern DevOps practices. In fact, SRE lays out the groundwork for what is required to make DevOps scale for most organizations.
SRE at CoreLogic has a simple but effective mandate. It is “to provide the means to keep a system functional and in line with defined objectives, from a user’s perspective, despite certain types of failure.” Site reliability engineers use their robust software skills, and have a deep commitment to automation, as a means of eliminating human toil.
The upside of SRE adoption is irresistible. SRE allows CoreLogic to use infrastructure-as-code for routine change management tasks, environment maintenance, and places the power of on-demand context-specific automated procedures into the right hands. SRE also brings the opportunity for self-healing of services based on service level indicators (SLIs) and service level objectives (SLOs).
An SRE team includes people with skills in software development, networking, and system engineering. This team will spend roughly half of their time creating automation to avoid issues and to take the toil out of routine items. It is about learning, improving, and then transferring that knowledge to others to drive a more resilient IT ecosystem. As we advance, we in turn educate our clients and the industry to help them grow and perform. It’s an ongoing loop of feedback, innovation, and education that makes us a dynamic and valuable resource for everyone we do business with. We help turn our intelligence into an ongoing advantage by helping the companies we work with grow and achieve results that otherwise would be unthinkable.
CoreLogic is continuing its journey to SRE by seeking humbly confident candidates who can join our team. We are looking for forward thinkers who want to work in a collaborative, innovative, and fast-moving environment. See here for current open SRE roles.
